Transcriptome-Wide Identification of miRNAs and Their Targets from Typha angustifolia by RNA-Seq and Their Response to Cadmium Stress

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play important roles in plant responses to environmental stress. In this work, we used high-throughput sequencing to analyze transcriptome and small RNAs (sRNAs) in Typha angustifolia under cadmium (Cd) stress. 57,608,230 raw reads were obtained from deep sequencing of a pooled cDNA library. Sequence assembly and analysis yielded 102,473 unigenes. We subsequently sequenced tw...

Asparaginase Isolated from Developing Seeds of Pisum sativum

Asparaginase (EC 3.5.1.1) was isolated from the developing seed of Pisum sativum. The enzyme is dependent upon the presence of K+ for activity, although Na+ and Rb+ may substitute to a lesser extent. Maximum activity was obtained at K+ concentrations above 20 millimolar. Potassium ions protected the enzyme against heat denaturation. The enzyme has a molecular weight of 68,300. Asparaginase acti...

SEASONAL DIFFERENCES IN THE DECOMPOSITION OF Typha angustifolia LEAVES IN A MEDITERRANEAN RIVER

This study evaluated seasonal differences (spring and summer) in the processing of Typhu ungustifolia leaves in a Mediterranean river. The experiment extended over 120 days, corresponding to six sampling periods for each experiment. Leaves (5 g) were placed in 0.5 cm mesh-size bags. After recovering the sample, macroinvertebrates inside the leaf bags were retrieved and the leaves preserved by f...

The production of penicillin using fractions obtained from aqueous extracts of pea (Pisum sativum).

Aqueous extracts of air-dried ground peas% can provide a good mediuim for the growth and production of penicillin byPeniciUium notatum (Cook&Tulloch, 1944). The experiments to be described were carried out to determine what constituents of the pea were responsible for this effect. Although other vegetable extracts give a similar effect the pea lias been chosen as it is a readily available mater...

Responses of proline, lipid peroxidation and antioxidative enzymes in two varieties of Pisum sativum L. under salt stress

The possible involvement of activated oxygen species in the mechanism of damage by NaClstress was studied in leaves of two varieties of pea (Pisum sativum L.) cv. EC 33866 and Puget. Thelevel of lipid peroxidation, enzyme activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD, EC 1.15.1.1), ascorbateperoxidase (APX, EC 1.11.1.11), glutathione reductase (GR, EC 1.6.4.2), dihydroascorbate reductase(DHAR, 1.8.5.1)...
